Courses

These are the courses I’ve taught here at Pellissippi State. Typically I teach four sections each semester.

  • CGT 1030 Introduction to Macintosh Graphic Design This course introduces students to Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Text: InDesign CS for Macintosh and Windows by Sandee Cohen and Illustrator CS for Windows & Macintosh by Elaine Weinmann and Peter Lourekas.
  • CGT 1105 Digital Graphic Design I This introductory studio course assigns five projects in various categories of graphic design to help students better ideas and aesthetics, and to build their design portfolios. Text: Graphic Design Solutions, Third Edition by Robin Landa (download syllabus here.)
  • CGT 1110 Typography This course focuses on the history and techniques of the printed word. Text: Thinking with Type: A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students by Ellen Lupton (download syllabus here.)
  • CGT 1510 History of Graphic Design & Illustration A survey of the history of visual communication from the Paleolithic era to the 1990s. The text is Meggs’ History of Graphic Design by Phillip Meggs. This course has been retired from the curriculum.
  • CGT 1911 Portfolio a short course to prepare students for their portfolio review. There is no text.
  • CGT 1950 Design Fundamentals A course teaching visual literacy through the elements and principles of design. Text: Graphic Design Solutions, Third Edition by Robin Landa.
  • CGT 2050 Special Projects This course varies in content. I developed and piloted a print design course on InDesign under this course number. Text: Exploring InDesign CS2 by Terry Rydberg.
  • CGT 2105 Digital Graphic Design III An advanced studio course covering package and promotional design. There is no text for this course.
  • MDT 2998 Internship (formerly CGT 2998) This independent practicum requires students to work 90 hours at an approved internship in the graphic design profession. There is no text for this course.
