Erin Garty just dropped by my office and spilled about Make/Think. It’s an AIGA Design Conference and it’s coming to Tennessee October 8–11, 2009. And no, I’m not planning to miss it. There are speakers, events, and even a graphic design reality show for students.

Robin Easter is owner of Robin Easter Design, a Knoxville-based firm that has served East Tennessee since 1989. Easter received her BFA from The University of Tennessee. Her clients represent a broad section of Knoxville’s corporate and creative endeavors including AC Entertainment, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Elizabeth Eason Architects, Bistro by the Tracks, and the Bijou Theater. Robin Easter Design has specialized in creating logos, corporate identity programs, websites, signage, displays, print materials, publications, marketing campaigns, packaging, electronic communications and more for individuals, companies and organizations throughout the United States.

We’ve tried in the past to get an AIGA student group at Pellissippi, but this effort seems to have some legs. and whiskers. First year student Erin Garty came up with the idea, and within a few days we had 20 students who signed up. Students who join by this Thursday can save $45 off of the regular student rate. Kyle Blue serves as the Design Director of Dwell—the first magazine to explore both the interiors and exteriors of modern home design in a stylish yet accessible way. With its focus on a new modernistic approach to design, Dwell offers identity, creativity and harmony. Blue has led his team through a complete redesign of the periodical which is now entering its second volume. Before being appointed to his current position, Blue worked as a senior designer for Apple, and earlier held the position of Senior Designer at Dwell. As a Design Fellow at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, he designed several books including Julie Mehretu: Drawing and Painting as well as materials for museum exhibitions and programs. Blue has also worked for Tenazas Design in San Francisco and was the first intern hired by Knoxville’s Yee Haw Industries. A native of North Carolina and graduate of NC State’s Graphic Design program, Blue now lives and works in San Francisco, CA, where he enjoys fixed gear bicycling.
