Most of my students know about dafont.com, but MyFonts.com also has a number of free fonts as well. The trouble for me was always finding the free promotional fonts hidden among the paid fonts. Josh Buchanon has shown me how to use the search feature in the much more attractive Beta version of the site. Just set the search feature to search for a price of zero to see all the font families that contain free fonts. Then you have to dig down a bit further and click on the individual fonts to ind the free ones. Jos Buivenga’s Museo is my favorite.

What they might not know is… so am I. Once grades are filed, faculty members lock up their offices to return to the serious business of summer creative projects. In my case that means doing some book design, letterpress printing, and leading a study abroad program.

As most of my readers know by now, I’m going to spend the month of June in the Netherlands teaching History of Graphic Design and galavanting around. In between galavanting I’ll be posting on yet another blog. Imagine. I hope you’ll all follow the Going Dutch Blog and post lots of comments.

I’ll be back with more graphic design resources, musings, and semi-witty banter later this summer. (Photo by Alejandro Cantarero.)

Design professionals drop by to pick up resumes, and families get to see what all the fuss has been about. As usual, David Gilbert has arranged for food and live music. The new AIGA student group is also assembling some very cool gift bags and door prizes. The beautiful poster this year was designed by Franny Priestly.

We’ve tried in the past to get an AIGA student group at Pellissippi, but this effort seems to have some legs. and whiskers. First year student Erin Garty came up with the idea, and within a few days we had 20 students who signed up. Students who join by this Thursday can save $45 off of the regular student rate. Now we are ready to collect dues, elect officers, and most importantly, choose a mascot. I’m lobbying heavily for Françoise here to be the official AIGA ferret. Photo by Kymberly Vohsen

Kyle Blue serves as the Design Director of Dwell—the first magazine to explore both the interiors and exteriors of modern home design in a stylish yet accessible way. With its focus on a new modernistic approach to design, Dwell offers identity, creativity and harmony. Blue has led his team through a complete redesign of the periodical which is now entering its second volume. Before being appointed to his current position, Blue worked as a senior designer for Apple, and earlier held the position of Senior Designer at Dwell. As a Design Fellow at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, he designed several books including Julie Mehretu: Drawing and Painting as well as materials for museum exhibitions and programs. Blue has also worked for Tenazas Design in San Francisco and was the first intern hired by Knoxville’s Yee Haw Industries. A native of North Carolina and graduate of NC State’s Graphic Design program, Blue now lives and works in San Francisco, CA, where he enjoys fixed gear bicycling.
