Mini Campaigns

Posted by: opendoordesign | November 14, 2008 | 27 Comments |

My Design II students have designed these mini campaigns for national brands ranging from financial to non-profits. Which are the most appropriate, creative, and potentially effective? Students with the most votes will select a team and create a complete campaign based on these designs. Who will be promoted to at director and who will be looking for a job? Help decide! Leave a comment with your favorites and the reason for your choices. On Monday I’ll post the winners.

Update: As of Monday, the winning mini campaigns are from David Mullinax, Amanda McCathern, Deigha Anderson-Williams, and Jerrica Dickenson. Now they are selecting creative teams to present their full campaigns on December 3.

The print ad is the best in my opinion.

Deigha Anderson – Davis

Ms. Priestly, I feel, has the best approach all around. Other students created some single works that were stronger than hers, but her campaign is the strongest as a group. She maintains a clean approach, as MS’s brand denotes – sans serif font, geometric designs. Her campaign slogan also exhibits that same geometric and mathematic feel, and displays what the company actually does. As far as her being an Art Director, I think she would make a strong choice simply due to her organizational and interpersonal skills. She consistently seems on top of her game and I’m assuming she can easily verbalize what she expects and wants from a team; she always has spoken clearly with me about her ideas.

I VOTE FOR FRAN!

Amanda McCathern..Powerful, effective imagery.
David Mullinax…Very knowlegable about product
Deigah Anderson….Not afraid to test the boundries.

Daniel Hallquist- knows the brand and compaign extremely well. love the use of colors, looks very professional.

Jerrica Dickenson – The drawings really tie the whole compaign together. It looks clean and simple with a little edge.

Amanda McCathern – Strong photos, black and white photos are always a good choice, strong message, very nice work.

David Mullinax’s direct mail piece is really clean in organizing the visual and verbal elements.
Amanda McCathern’s campaign was my favorite. the gray scale reinforces the unity within her visual cues for each(the eyes)..really nice
Deigha(me) has one of the most emphatic pieces. not to patronage but, the billboard is successfully concrete in stressing the clients message.
besides myself, Michel Dotty ran a nice campaign.

amanda mccathern- i loved her campaign. the greyscale w/tiny amounts of red is really nice.

jerrica dickenson- her illustration gives a really nice christmas feel without being cheesy.

david mullinax- his design is nice and clean. this would make a nice campaign.

Jerrica Dickenson – Very nicely done. I love how she used her original drawings for the graphics.

Franny Priestley – Very nicely done. Powerful and effective.

David Mullinax – Very creative piece. They were very clean and he knows the product.

My top three (wish I could vote for more):

Jerrica – great personalization of an impersonal company

Anastasia – your Amnesty brochure is well-designed and highly effective.

Daniel – I love the thought and effort that you put into Neiman’s “lock box”

When viewing the campaigns I was impressed by the talent everyone in this class has in portraying their clients. I am friends with a previous student of this program and is graduating from Watkins this year and after viewing the pieces that they have produced, many in this class are already there ( he agreed)in terms of design, so to everyone..I applaud you.

I wished we could pick more, Frannys consistent design elements in her pieces (even in the direct mail holder) was stunning. Jerricas hand drawn piece, not only showed the effective simplicity of design but the talent she has that hadn’t been exposed before. Daniel had his best piece yet, the overall functionality of the piece was brilliant. Cordelias complete campaign was very nostalgic in the imagery and being that she created the images and design elements herself shows a force to reckon with in this field.

It was hard to decide on which ones I thought were better than others, I had to remove myself from the class and view them as a newcomer to these pieces, keeping the presentations in mind and reviewing everyone’s work (multiple times) I came to this decision.

I was torn between Anastasia and Amanda McCathern- The imagery is very gripping in both campaigns. To look in the eyes of these children you can’t help to feel compelled to respond to the cause. I felt that Anastasias direct mail piece was beautiful in terms of type, copy, and placement of images, not to mention overall design. However, the black and white photography in Amanda’s piece set the mood; the black and white theme throughout with the red type was strong and enveloping. So with that said, I choose Amanda McCathern

Second, I have to choose Deigha, very powerful use of elements. The reverse barrel and the blood spots, though some may be turned off by, was what drew me in. It was a completely different way of depicting Amnesty International and showed no restraint in the route a client can take to reach another demographic of supporters (you may not see this approach in Time or Newsweek, but it would be something that would be targeted to the Rolling Stone Magazine or The Source)

And lastly, I had to remove my modesty and nominate myself. David Mullinax. The reason why is because I am a user and believer in this product. It is literally why I still shoot pictures today. When developing this mini campaign I had developed many ways of reinforcing the message and product, I was limited during the class to relinquish all of the ways I could approach the brand.

Deigha Anderson-Davis
David Mullinax

(I apologize for this short novel , but I felt the need to expand my reasoning behind my choices)

Deigha Anderson-Davis – Very Strong campaign. Grabs your attention immediately. Love the illustration, and the whole idea.

Amanda McCathern – Images are amazing! So much emotion! Love the black and white with the few words in red.

Jerrica Dickenson – I love the fact that she drew the images. I am very fond of that style and love the whole look.

Jerrica Dickenson – very creative and clean approach. successfully gets the message across and conveys a christmas feeling

Cordelia Norris – love the whole idea. the dolls are something fun, as well as promotional. i like the fact that its an approach that neiman marcus has never done before, and i believe it would be very successful.

David Mullinax – very professional looking campaign

Deigha Anderson-Davis ; Franny Priestley ; David Mullinax

Cordelia Norris – I loved her creative approach to her brochure and her old-fashioned design theme. I really loved her gift card design (and I’m sure other men would too).

Jason Smith – liked the simple idea and theme using just that one picture. What I truly think is great about this and sets it apart from the others in the campaign, the fact that it manages to advertise the product without actually showing the product itself.

Sarah Davis AND Ashlee Reed – I couldn’t decide which one’s campaign I liked better. Sarah’s was both reassuring and comforting to the viewer. Ashlee’s had a unique layout that was complex in ways, but still simple in its idea.

Franny Priestly (nice updating of the brand in the curent economic situation), Jerrica Dickson (I like the idea of Santa’s workshop as an assembly line) and Cordelia Norris (great drawings and cute gift card.)

A friend of mine in the class told me to look on this site and look at the campaigns and see what I thought, not only of his, but everyone else’s. I found all of them creative, but there was one that stood out from the rest. It seemed that the one by Deigha wasnt an actual advertisement. It seemed more like propoganda. The rest of them were advertisements designed to grab your attention and get you into the store and buy something, or to donate money, or to start an account with that company.

THe three that i feel best represented an actual advertisement were

Jerrica – her drawings were amazing and gave a very light sense to the advertisement.

Daniel H – I liked the creative approach to the campaign. THe lock box is a great idea to attract people

Cordelia – The hand drawn outfits and doll were extremely well done. THe whole idea was extremely creative and retro, which I feel would bring lots of people in to the store.

Daniel, Amanda, and Cordelia

Amanda McCathern – great use of black and white with one bold color. Wonderful tagline. Simple, effective, memorable.

Anastasia Williams – Also great use of photography and color. Love the modern, professional designed feel. Good concept.

Jerrica Dickenson – Beautiful! I LOVE hand-done stuff. This is a perfect balance between organic and modern/clean. Nice compelling tagline for the season.

Deigha – I think Deigha approached this the way I believe Amnesty would, pushing the envelope. Leaving behind something in the viewer’s mind.

David – I like the clean layout of the ad and the informative direct mail for the new slr user. Of course the flash is cool too.

Cordelia – The vintage approach of this campaign is what I like best. I think it speaks to the fashion connoisseur with the illustrations. I think it would definitely bring people into the store.

Franny Priestly

Did this last night but for some reason it isn’t up here,
Deigha, David, Cordelia

Franny – Her theme was creative and funny, and the design elements were consistent from piece to piece.

Amanda – The images and copy do a good job of conveying the feel of the what company is trying to help.

Cordeila – The hand drawn art was a creative idea, and a nice change from the typical fashion ads

good job.

Good job all.

I have to say I like Anastasia Williams work the best. Clear simple use of one image throughout. Seemed to have and carry strong message. You really want to help this child. Fresh style to photography chosen, not you typical Amnesty black and white photo. Good design on poster and other pieces.

Hate to say, but you should all know, I also like her presentation best because it’s all in one piece. You get to see it all clearly and at one time. No extra clicking and remembering. Important to think about clear simple presentation on top of doing the work.

All good work. I do think Anastasia’s stands out.

So you know, i’m an old buddy of your Professor. Todd, Transformer, Duren. I work in the business. Currently Detroit. Maybe we can talk more.

It was fun looking at your work. Would love to help you grow.

Know that you can go anywhere you want from where you are. Todd and I have. So any of you can too.

Apply yourselves.
