“Foundry” is a term as outdated as, well… metal type. A foundry originally was a facility for casting objects like type metal. Now this quaint term has been generalized to mean any vendor of type. The term seems appropriate for P22, a type foundry specializing in historic typefaces originally cast in metal, like Frederick Goudy’s Californian, seen here. P22 spin-off projects include International House of Fonts, Lanston Type, Rimmer Type Foundry, and Sherwood Type. Husband and wife team Richard Kegler and Carima El-Behairy also publish books, music CDs, and are co-organizers of this year’s TypeCon.
