Milton Glaser Talks Propaganda

Posted by: opendoordesign | March 12, 2008 | 4 Comments |

preempt.gifYesterday I was in class reviewing energy independence poster roughs with my students and one student’s photo of a junkie metaphorically injecting oil into his arm got me talking about propaganda. I mentioned Milton Glaser as a great designer who has been politically active pursuading his audience with images and type for decades. Here’s an address he gave last month at the School of Visual Arts. Read it over. The illustration is a button designed by Glaser.

Hey Todd,

I found this website looking for fireflygraphics – remember that? :) Actually, I was looking for you w.r.t. your Chota activities, and not your graphic design activities.

Anyway, this was a wonderful article. However, how many artists, or for that matter professionals, have the luxury of making choices? Not too many, I’m afraid. Most of them are too involved making a living, and are too indoctrinated to believe that it is their job to be making choices, not just for themselves, but for other people as well. If you create a position for yourself, from where you can dictate terms only then you can preach. And the moment you start to do that you create your steadily increasing army of detractors.

Hello, Anonymous Friend from My Past. I’m not in Chota Canoe Club anymore, mostly because I am too busy raising kids, but they are great folks, and someday I’ll get back on the river. Anyway…

Not many people are courageous enough to say “Preemptive War is Terrorism” to their close friends, much less to The American Public. And yet it’s true. Didn’t we learn in kindergarten that it’s wrong to hit people that don’t hit us?

Anyway, Glaser is pretty philosophical in his advanced years. For more from this icon of American design, you can read “Ten Things I Have Learned” article on his website at http://www.miltonglaser.com.

Eric:

Thanks for the comment, friend. I like the Shepard Fairey print of Obama, though it looks less confrontationally hip than his Obey stuff.

Oh, and for the Most Courageous Comments on Race, watch Obama’s entire 40-minute speech ( I know, but it’s worth the time) online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWe7wTVbLUU
