Trompe L’oeil

Trompe-l’œil (French: “trick the eye”) is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects really exist, instead of actually being a two-dimensional painting. —Wikipedia

Krestin Churchwell e-mailed me these interesting trompe l’oeil packaging photos. Although all 2D images fool the eye, these take it to another level. Like a nude model in painted-on clothes, a cathedral with a fake painted-on dome, or a shopping bag that looks like a sidearm. This stuff has been popular throughout history, from 17th century Baroque paintings to to contemporary street paintings. Flickr even has a page dedicated to it.
