The scholar and typographer Beatrice Ward wrote a great short essay that explains much when it comes to fine typography. The Crystal Goblet is a well-known bit of typographic lore that reminds us that good typography must serve content. If we forget that, we are drinking good cabernet out of a beer can. Of course Ward assumes we have good wine in the glass, when sometimes it’s Boone’s Farm. Anyway, it’s a great metaphor that you may read about at Typo-L.
