
The fashion model Kate Moss now has her own typeface. According to LiveJournal, Kate started with a designed letterhead by Peter Saville and Paul Barnes and ended up with an original font. So what does it look like? Think Bauer Bodoni with crooked teeth and an eating disorder.
In other typographic news, Helvetica turned 50 on Sunday. Apparently the font got a little crazy and ran through the streets of Basel, Switzerland drinking Schnapps and wearing a mismatched pair of Caslon serifs.
I’ve been researching the open source movement, and have discovered a design student’s wet dream. It’s free software that mimics the Adobe apps. With Adobe shipping CS3 this month, some students might be looking to avoid the hefty price tag. And with names like Scribus, Inkscape, and The Gimp, how can you not be curious? I’ll be checking them out over the summer.
Designer and sculptor Tim Thyzel is showing some fun work at the KMA here in Knoxville. The website says, “Thyzel’s whimsical constructions blur the distinctions between art and life, using everyday objects to make us more aware of the aesthetic value of our surroundings.” The results are humorous, elegant, and surprising.
