Saving antiquities may not seem like a big deal, unless you imagine your nation or religion’s artifacts on the black market. What if the Gutenberg Bible or the Liberty Bell were being sold on eBay?
That’s what is happening in the Tigris-Euphrates Valley, cradle of world civilization. Mankind’s hometown is in the middle of war-torn Iraq, and one of the less visible war crimes there has been the looting of priceless artifacts under the American occupation.
Across the world from Mexico to China, our material culture is threatened. Saving Antiquities for Everyone, or SAFE is working to call attention to the problem. SAFE is the Amnesty International of artifacts, and they are hosting a contest for photographers, illustrators, artists, and designers. This is one of the winners from 2005.
Go to the SAFE websiteto read more and download a call for entries. The deadline has been extended to April 16, giving students just about three weeks to get their entries together.
